My last project was my most ambitious, and also my most rushed - not an optimal combination. I usually have to do some editing/photoshopping when creating a reference, but this project required splicing two not-quite-lined-up images together and imagining the rest as I worked. I think this is evident in the final piece, as there are some apparent proportion issues, but I was happy with the atmosphere and color of the work overall. After seeing the "Giants" exhibition at the VMFA, one of the artists whose work stuck with me the most was Jerome Lagarrigue. Raised in Paris, Lagarrigue graduated from RISD with a degree in illustration in 1996 before teaching painting and drawing at the Parsons School of Design from 1997 to 2005. Process: Project 5/6
My latest piece, "birthday," was by far the most labor-intensive and difficult piece I've done so far, so much so that it required becoming a process critique. This was definitely worth it, though, as I felt proud of the final product after getting to spend a significant amount of time detailing the faces. Leaving the faces for last is something I don't always do, but the difficult nature of self-portraiture and capturing likenesses created some hesitancy for me to start them
