My latest piece, "birthday," was by far the most labor-intensive and difficult piece I've done so far, so much so that it required becoming a process critique. This was definitely worth it, though, as I felt proud of the final product after getting to spend a significant amount of time detailing the faces. Leaving the faces for last is something I don't always do, but the difficult nature of self-portraiture and capturing likenesses created some hesitancy for me to start them. In the end, however, I was glad to work in this order, as it allowed me to bring the rest of the painting to a higher level of finish rather than simply making the faces detailed and getting looser with the rest of the piece like in "Poise".
